FIG. A1 — DR. AJAZ BASHIR JANJUA

Dr. Ajaz Bashir Janjua has spent close to four decades at the center of Pakistan's mechanical and heavy engineering sector. A graduate of the University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore (B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering, 1986), he went on to earn an M.Sc. and later a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from UET Taxila in 2013, researching the design and development of hydro-power turbines using computational fluid dynamics.

He spent 34 years at the Heavy Mechanical Complex (HMC) Taxila — rising from Trainee Engineer in 1987 through the Design and Project Management departments to General Manager (Research & Development) — where he designed and tested a 250kW cross-flow hydro turbine and led the development of Kaplan and water-wheel turbines. He currently serves as Director of the Innovation, Design & Process Optimization Centre (IDePrO) at Pakistan Ordnance Factories, Wah.

"Every machine begins as a drawing, and every nation's industry begins with the engineers willing to draft it."

Beyond the drawing board, Dr. Janjua serves on the Governing Body of the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Pakistan, and works as a PEC-accredited Program Evaluator — having assessed mechanical engineering programs at more than 30 universities across Pakistan and, most recently, at Middle East Technical University's Northern Cyprus campus.

Off the Drawing Board

Raised in Chakwal, Punjab, and fluent in Punjabi and Urdu, Dr. Janjua is a proud father — his son, Hamza Ajaz Janjua, recently qualified as an architect after completing his B.S. at COMSATS University Islamabad. Four decades in the profession have also meant four decades of friendships, from early mentors to the wide circle of engineers and colleagues he still gathers with today.
